First graders read the Mexican folktale, The Lizard and the Sun. This book tells the story of a time when the sun disappeared from the sky. An inquisitive lizard, with the help of some friends, find the sun hiding inside a rock. Together, they crack the rock open and rise the sun from its slumber.
Using imagery from the book, along with other sources, students designed their own Mexican suns. These designs were transferred to foam and printed, in a process called relief printing. Then students created another design for a sun and tooled it to metal.
