Fifth graders practiced drawing a group of cacti from observation. We learned different techniques for creating value using pen and ink. We also discussed overlapping elements in an image to create the illusion of depth. Preparatory sketches were transferred to the final paper, outlined with sharpie, and completed using watercolors. For the border, students learned a printmaking technique called relief printing. In this technique, areas are carved/removed from the printing block (a flexible rubber), creating what is essentially a stamp.
